Welcome to Reception

Our Reception children are in Red class and are grouped into four learning groups: Poppy, Cherry, Ruby and Berry. These groups are flexible to allow children to make friends across the whole cohort and to ensure our Reception staffing team know and understand all the children very well.

Useful Information

PE

PE will be on a Monday and a Friday morning. Please send your child in dressed in their PE kit on Mondays and Fridays.

Reading

Please share simple stories and rhymes with your child daily to build their love for reading. Children will be sent home with sounds to practise each week or a phonics reading book as they develop in their level of reading. Books should be read daily for the week; we will change it every Wednesday.

Phonics

In Reception children learn these sounds:

s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, l  j, v, w, x, y, z, qu, th, sh, ch, ng, nk

When they are confident and accurate with these sounds, children go on to learn ai, ee, igh, oa, oo.

Sounds are sent home regularly with links to helpful videos. Additionally, you can visit our phonics page for parent guides to help you support your child with learning phonics at home.

Parent Workshops

In Reception we run several parent workshops throughout the year. These informal sessions provide parents with opportunity to come into class and experience their child’s learning alongside them. We talk about the skills your child is learning through the playful experiences we provide, how this links to the Early Years Curriculum and the underpinning early years research into child development. The topics range from fine motor skills development for writing, how we teach phonics, Drawing Club to our very popular Christmas Crafts workshop. We have had great feedback from our parents!

I attended phonics and Christmas crafts. Phonics was eye-opening and I feel it has really helped me understand how to support R in his learning. Christmas crafts was brilliant fun, very well organised and we both really loved it!

The workshops were really special and I really loved having the opportunity to join my daughter at school and see her having fun with classmates and teachers. Was especially impressed with the dough gym! Thank you 🙂

We really appreciate the time the Early Years Team is taking to put on these extra sessions. Thank you.

It’s so lovely to be included. It’s lovely to get to see how my child learns along with all his friends.
