Welcome to Year 3

Year 3 is a great year of school; we are the first year of Key Stage 2 and as such the children have covered the basics of English and Maths and are now ready to delve deeper and cover some really interesting aspects of these and other subjects.  The children grow more mature in Y3 and begin to take on more responsibility for themselves and their own learning. We encourage children to challenge themselves and become the best person they can be.

Useful Information

PE

Year 3 has PE on Tuesdays and Fridays and must come to school wearing the correct PE school uniform on both these days.

Reading

Children are expected to read at least 4 times a week. If they read accelerated reader books they usually only need to read these once before taking the quiz and changing them. However, if they do not pass that test they will be expected to re-read that book. If your child reads RWI (phonics) books the expectation is that they read these books twice and answer the questions correctly before having the book changed.

Please write in your child’s reading record every time you read with them.

Class books this year:

  • Term 1 – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
  • Term 2 – The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo
  • Term 3 – The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
  • Term 4 – Stig of the Dump by Clive King
  • Term 5 – The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo
  • Term 6 – Grandpa Chatterji by Jamila Gavin

Spellings

Spellings to learn are included on the weekly homework sheet.  We send home 12 spellings at a time and children have 2 weeks to practise and learn these.

Our spellings are always linked to the spelling pattern that we are focussing on in class and children have a 15 minute spelling session at the start of each English lesson.

Homework

This will be sent out and marked on a Friday.

Our Learning

Details of learning in our class can be found in Our Learning pages. The curriculum map below is a summary overview for the year.
