Welcome to Year 6

Year 6 Information Evening slides: Y6 Information Evening 18th September

Welcome to Year 6! We are privileged to take your children on an exciting journey through their important final year at primary school. Irresistible learning and exciting extracurricular activities provide many opportunities for children to make special memories to take with them to secondary school and beyond. We are an experienced team who will make sure that children are prepared, confident and happy with their SATs test in May and their transition to their next chapter of learning.

Our broad range of subjects this year will see the children learn about a range of exciting topics: our circulatory system; Georgian Bath and Bristol; Kenya and the impacts of tourism on delicate ecosystems; volcanoes and earthquakes and the evolution of species over time. Children will have opportunities to develop important skills in team building, cooking, sewing, printing and drawing. Trips and experiences, including our visit to No. 1 Royal Crescent, Year 6 camp and – of course – the spectacular Year 6 production, enrich the learning opportunities we have planned and ensure that this year is one the children will remember!

Useful Information

PE

Indigo and Lilac Classes each have PE lessons on Monday and Thursday every week. On both days, children should come to school wearing their PE uniform: a PSJ PE t-shirt, PSJ PE hoodie, plain and unbranded shorts/tracksuit bottoms/leggings in navy blue or black and trainers that are suitable for PE.

Strings Group

Year 6 will have the opportunity to join a string ensemble this year.

Reading

Even in Year 6 and beyond, reading to and with your child regularly is very important and can give your child a great advantage in many aspects of life. Research has shown that regular reading at the age of 10 has a significant effect on a child’s achievement at age 16 and beyond. Therefore, in Year 6, we give reading the importance it deserves with exciting class novels and an expectation that children will enjoy exploring books outside of their daily reading sessions.

Reading records are brought in every day to be checked. Where your child has read at home, please initial and date the relevant page in their reading record. A mixture of independent reading, reading together and reading to your child will mean your child is maximising their opportunities to enjoy and make good progress with their fluency and expression when reading. Tips for reading at home can be found here: Tips for reading with your child | BookTrust

In Year 6 2024 – 2025, we will be studying the following books:

  • Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman (Term 1)
  • Warrior Boy by Virginia Clay (Term 2)
  • Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz (Term 3)
  • Holes by Louis Sachar (Term 4)
  • A novel linked to the Year 6 production (Term 6 – TBA)

Though we want to keep twists and turns exciting and surprising for the children, having a copy of our termly book at home that you can revisit with your child and discuss together will deepen their learning and engagement with the book. Asking questions about the day’s reading and learning will mean that your child is revisiting and practising what they have learned which will advantage them.

Spellings

Spellings are set weekly on a Monday and consist of a combination of words that are being taught and practised in Year 6 and spellings taught in previous year groups that the children are consistently making errors with. Spelling tests will take place on a Monday and children’s progress will be tracked so that we can help with tips and strategies where needed.

Homework

Homework is set weekly and comprises a combination of Doodle Maths, Times Table Rockstars and paper-based activities. Homework is set with the purpose of complimenting learning and ensuring your child makes good progress by completing some extra practice on areas of learning they could benefit from. As we approach SATs, and in preparation for moving to secondary school, homework will be set daily after Christmas and focuses on maths, spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG) and reading using SATs revision books. We will be in touch with details of SATs revision homework towards the New Year.
