Welcome to Year 1

In Year One we are enthusiastic and ambitious learners! This year is about developing our numeracy and literacy skills as we enter into Key Stage 1.  We are continually adding to our range of Maths skills and developing our fluency in Maths. We love doing our Mental Maths sessions each day! We are making great progress with our phonics knowledge and becoming strong readers. We are also learning writing skills and developing the ability to write well structured but exciting sentences. This year we also get to explore the wider curriculum; Science, History, Geography, RE, Design Technology, Art and PSHE! We are learning so much about our world and are looking forward to some exciting trips and activities.

Useful Information

PE

PE days are Monday and Thursday. Please come to school wearing your PE kit on these days.

Reading

We expect children to read at least four times a week at home – an adult needs to sign when they read in their reading record and reading books need to be in school every day.

Our class books this year so far: Ruby’s Worry, Last Stop on Market Street, Perfectly Norman, Six Dinner Sid, The Knight who wouldn’t fight, The Queen’s Hat.

Phonics

In Year 1 children consolidate Phase 2 sounds first

s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, l

Then these sounds next…

j, v, w, x, y, z, qu, th, sh, ch, ng, nk

and then finally these sounds…

ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, er

Visit our phonics page for parent guides to help you support your child with learning phonics at home.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on Fridays, and is expected back in on the following Friday, when we will mark it together.

The homework will be maths and English based, recapping previous learning from the week before, recalling what the children have learnt that current week and looking ahead to the next week.

Homework is expected to take the children around 20 minutes.

Our Learning

Details of learning in our class can be found in Our Learning pages. The curriculum map below is a summary overview for the year.
