Our Mini Police visited Kingswood Fire Station this week in order to further their knowledge and understanding our our emergency services.

We started our visit with a tour of the station and an engine. Did you know that the middle part of the engine is a giant tank full of water? This water lasts 6 minutes when fighting a fire so as soon as the crew arrive at a fire the driver must find a fire hydrant for when the tank runs dry. On the top of the engine is a giant ladder to help the fire fighters rescue people from high buildings. The sides of the engine are like a giant tool box, holding everything they might need to assist in a rescue of any kind. We learnt that fire fighters don’t just put out fires; they perform lots of rescues too. They rescue people from buildings, vehicles and from water and they rescue animals too.

We held some of the equipment and tried on the uniform too. It was all so heavy!

Just as we’d finished our tour, the crew were called to an emergency. We watched them in action and were amazed with the speed at which they left on their mission – only 45 seconds!
