This week, Year 1 wrapped up warm and set off on an exciting walk to the woods. Despite the chilly weather, the children showed wonderful resilience, embracing the cold and turning our journey into a real-life bear hunt—through the rustling leaves, up and over fallen trees, and finally into the woodland opening.
Once we arrived, we gathered to talk about the importance of boundaries and how they help keep us safe during our outdoor learning. To put this into practice, we played a few rounds of “1, 2, 3, Where Are You?” – a fun way for the children to explore the area while learning to stay within the safe zone.
With our boundaries understood, it was time for free play, and the woods came alive with imagination and adventure. Some children zoomed down the slide and used the rope to climb back up the bank, while others created colourful patterns by painting tree trunks with chalk paint. There were dens being built, leaf angels being made, and plenty of teamwork, creativity, and joyful exploration happening all around.
Before leaving, we gathered for a special blindfold activity, helping the children tune into their senses and trust their partners. We finished with our talking stick reflection, giving everyone the chance to share what they had enjoyed most about their time in the woods.
With happy hearts (and muddy boots!), we made our way back to school after a fantastic woodland adventure. Well done Year 1!
