This morning we had a very special visitor. Kyra the European Barn Owl with her human mummy Sara. This was an amazing experience for all of the children (and adults). Every child was kind and gentle when they stroked Kyra. Her feathers are very soft and she did a little dance of happiness from side to side when being fussed by the children.

We learnt that she does not hoot as she is a barn owl, she screeches. Kyra was rescued at 8 weeks old and Sara has cared for her ever since. She is now 9 years old. Some of the children were very brave and held Kyra using a special glove because she has claws to grip to balance. Barn owls do not have an oil on the feathers so that they can glide and swoop silently when they hunt in the wild. They also have very sensitive hearing. One of their ears on the side of their heads is higher than the other. We had a very interesting and enjoyable visit.
