Welcome to Year 3

Year 3 is a great year of school; we are the first year of Key Stage 2 and as such the children have covered the basics of English and Maths and are now ready to delve deeper and cover some really interesting aspects of these and other subjects.  The children grow more mature in Y3 and begin to take on more responsibility for themselves and their own learning. We encourage children to challenge themselves and become the best person they can be.

Useful Information

PE
Year 3 has PE on Wednesday and Friday and must come to school wearing the correct PE school uniform on both these days.

Forest School

Throughout the Spring Term Year 3 have forest school. This will be alternate Wednesdays starting on 7th January. Please come to school with waterproof clothing and wellington boots to change into.

Reading – Please write in your child’s reading record every time you read with them

Children are expected to read at least 4 times a week. If they read accelerated reader books they usually only need to read these once before taking the quiz and changing them. However, if they do not pass that test they will be expected to re-read that book. If your child reads RWI (phonics) books the expectation is that they read these books twice and answer the questions correctly before having the book changed.

Guided Reading books this year:

  • Term 1 – Flat Stanley and the Great Egyptian Grave Robbery by S. Pennypacker
  • Term 2 – The Ancient Egyptian Sleepover – Stephen Davis
  • Term 3 – Sona Sharma: Very Best Big Sister – Chitra Soundar
  • Term 4 – The Great Cave by Terry Deary
  • Term 5 – The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton
  • Term 6 – The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton

Spellings

Spellings to learn are included on the weekly homework sheet. Children will have spellings sent home weekly. This will either be red words or spellings linked to the spelling pattern we are learning.

Our spellings are always linked to the spelling pattern that we are focussing on in class and children have a 15 minute spelling session at the start of each English lesson.

Please practice the Year 3 and 4 ‘Common Exception Words’ with your child regularly: https://cdn.oxfordowl.co.uk/2019/08/29/13/54/08/76f1443d-9b6d-4030-be0d-25fcfef01438/SpellingWordList_Y3-4.pdf
