Year 3 learned about the three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. They discovered that igneous rocks are formed when hot, melted rock cools and becomes solid. Sedimentary rocks are made when layers of sand, mud and small pieces of rock build up and press together over time. Metamorphic rocks form when rocks are changed by heat and pressure deep inside the Earth. To help understand these processes, the children used chocolate to model how the rocks are made. Melted chocolate represented igneous rock as it cooled and hardened. Layers of different chocolates were pressed together to show how sedimentary rock forms. Finally, the chocolate was warmed and squeezed to demonstrate how pressure and heat can change a rock into metamorphic rock.
