Local Study - Street names

One of the most important clues to the history of an area comes from street names. Every street has one, but where do they come from? And what do they tell us about the past? Some are fairly obvious, such as High Street, or Church Street, or Cathedral Close. Others are not quite so obvious, as as Buller Rd. or French St.

This week we're encouraging you to go on a local walk with a parent/carer and take notice of the street names you see. What do they tell you about the past? What 'type' are they (directional, themed etc.)? If there are any you find particularly interesting, we encourage you to find out more about how they got their name and what it tells you about the history.
